A brute force attack, is one where an attacker systematically cycles through each character used in a password. For the purposes of the above, I've assumed the attacker is making one hundred billion guesses of the password per second - very few people would have the ability to actually do this. In reality, most attacks of this nature would be limited to a few hundred guesses per second.
